Teeth Whitening / Deep Bleaching

“For many years now, teeth whitening has been accomplished in dental offices using various formulas of bleaching gels. All these gels have hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide as the active ingredient. The key to effective teeth whitening is to have a strong enough concentration of this ingredient on the teeth surfaces for a long enough period of time to achieve the desired whitening.

Whitening with products from the drug store or grocery store such as “white strips” can achieve some whitening. Bleaching your teeth using custom trays made by your dentist will allow use of a stronger concentration of hydrogen peroxide to be in contact with your teeth for a longer period of time. This will result in a greater degree of whitening. The use of accessory lights and lasers during bleaching may or may not improve your bleaching results and nearly always needs to be followed up with the use of custom tray bleaching for success.

Another less often used technique know as “Deep Bleaching” can be used to achieve excellent whitening results. Deep Bleaching involves more meticulously made custom bleaching trays, nightly bleaching for a prolonged period (20 days or more), a more effective proprietary bleaching gel, and special desensitizing liquid to keep your teeth comfortable during the process. Deep bleaching can successfully treat stubborn discolored teeth that other systems will not, and even work to a significant degree on tetracycline stained teeth (treatment times may need to be longer, though). Very few dentists currently offer the “Deep Bleaching” technique.

In Dr. Emerson’s practice, we offer custom tray bleaching, in office bleaching, or Deep Bleaching.
