Cosmetic Dentistry

Cosmetic or Esthetic Dentistry is a rapidly growing area of dentistry. Using modern techniques and materials in the hands of an experienced cosmetic dentist, the appearance of your smile can be greatly enhanced or improved: Your teeth can be straightened and whitened, stains and chips can be removed and repaired, spaces can be closed, missing teeth can be replaced, and many other improvements can be made.

There are a variety of materials and techniques that can be utilized to accomplish your new smile. All ceramic/porcelain crowns and veneers(a thin shell of porcelain) are sometimes used. Composite (an enamel-like plastic material) is frequently used for repairing small cavities and chipped or fractured tooth edges. Orthodontics (teeth straightening) is recommended for misaligned, crowded, rotated or gapped teeth. Invisalign is a newer orthodontic technique which uses clear plastic aligner trays that are barely noticeable rather than unattractive metal brackets and wires used for conventional orthodontics.

When evaluating your smile, Dr. Emerson will discuss your concerns and your needs and carefully evaluate several factors such as:

  • Tooth color—What color do we want so the teeth appear natural and attractive?
  • Tooth alignment—Is there spacing or crowding that needs correction? Are there bite problems?
  • Gum positioning—Are the gums symmetrical around the front teeth, is there gum recession or excess gum tissue?
  • Lip position—Is there a “gummy” smile or do the lips hide the teeth?
  • Tooth size discrepancies—Are certain teeth too big or too small, are they proportioned correctly?
  • Missing teeth—Are there missing teeth that need to be replaced for a full, beautiful and functional smile?
  • Other factors—Are there other issues to consider to keep you healthy and to achieve the smile you want?
